Although it might take a little time and patience, elk can be found in pretty good numbers in unit 50. Hunting near watering holes during the archery season has proven to be successful in the past. Spot and stalk hunting has also been a great method of hunting for this unit. During the rifle season, try getting away from any busy or main roads. The bulls will likely be where there is high coverage.

Unit 50 Boundaries: Unit 50 begins at the junction of US 84. To the east is NM 554 and to the north is New Mexico Highway 111. You will find US 285 to the south.

You can expect to find some mountains and foothills in unit 50. The steepest part of the terrain will mostly be on the sides of the ridges. Throughout this unit, you will find rivers and a few creeks flowing nearby.

Unit 50 has a wide variety of vegetation. The lower elevations are filled with pinyons and junipers. When you start to get into the middle and high elevations, you will start to see more ponderosa pines and oak brush.

We recommend bringing a map that displays private and public ground so that you know where you can access certain areas. Most of the unit is public ground and has good gravel and or dirt roads that provide good access. When allowed, four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended when traveling off main roads.
