Colorado Unit 214 is located in Routt County. The majority of land in unit 214 is private, so be mindful of the boundary lines while you are out hunting. The Routt National Forest has been a popular spot to hunt in years past. This unit does have some hunting pressure, but do not let that scare you away from a hunt. Even with the hunting pressure, unit 214 has proven to be successful time and time again. The elk and mule deer population in unit 214 have continued to rise each and every year. It is advised to do some research prior to your hunt to improve your chances of having a successful and more fulfilling hunt.

Mule deer hunting in Unit 214 Colorado carries a lot of land for a hunter to cover since the tags are valid in several other units. The archery and muzzleloader tags are legal to use in units 3, 4, 5, 14, 301 and 441, as well. An add-on bear tag is available for the archery and muzzleloader seasons, if you hold a mule deer tag. The rifle season tags are also valid in units 4, 14 and 441. The herds are more active in the higher elevations in the warmer months and descend to the lower altitudes as the winter progresses and temperatures drop. There is a considerable amount of private land in Colorado Unit 214, so ensure that you are UTD on property boundaries.

Vegetation in GMU Unit 214 CO

The vegetative variety in Colorado Unit 214 varies from scrub to coniferous evergreen forests. In the higher elevations, you will find mixed forests of spruces, firs and aspens. As the elevation drops lower, the shrubbery dominates the landscape with sagebrush, bitter brush and grass varieties. Lodgepole pine can be found throughout the unit, especially in the Routt National Forest, where it is the primary tree species.

US-40 runs along the southern border of Unit 214 Colorado, branching forest service and county roads off of it. County roads wind throughout the unit providing access to hunting areas. Aside from road travel, there are 53 miles of trails that aid hunters in working their way back into the remote areas. Be sure to carry a GPS unit with you since this unit does have predominantly private land.
